After listening to my crying and screaming and crying for two days, Marty did the one thing that he thought for sure would cheer me up... He took me to Best Buy to get a digital camera.
For those that know me well, I am always taking pictures. And for the last two years, I have been getting by with a Canon Rebel 35mm camera. And I have been selling clothes and stuff on ebay to save for a really good digital.
So here I was, so excited, and we get to Best Buy and I bought the camera that I have been anticipating all summer. The new Sony Alpha DSLR- A100. For those that don't know, Sony and Minolta merged and Minolta bowed out of the camera making business. They sold their technology to Sony and this is the baby of the two companies.
Never buy someone's first born child.
We get home late that night, and I hook up the battery to charge and I actually wake up at 4Am and start playing with the camera. I took this photo of me in my bathroom about 6:30.
And of course, when the kids get up, I start snapping shots of them.... and their eyes are closed in 90% of the photos that I took with the flash.
Since Saturday, I have taken over 300 photos with different settings and situations, and it more or less comes down to one thing: if I want to use the flash and take pictures of people, they are going to look asleep. This really sucks. I am so upset.
I did find a thread about the problem on a photography review site, and I am not the only one with this issue, but not every one seems to have it. It is early enough after the release that Sony says it is not an issue at this point.
Basically I am stuck. I can take it back to Best Buy, but I will have to pay a $150 restock fee if i want to trade it for a Canon or a Nikon.
Or I can only take pics of my kids outside, under perfect lighting conditions.
I am seriously about to run away from home and live with some gypsies.
Oh, and here are a couple of good photos that I got:

If you decide to take it back, my husband bought me a lower end Nikon. Had we known how much we were going to love this camera, he would have splurged for a higher end Nikon. His camera is a Cannon and he drools with envy over my little Nikon. He got me the lower end one, because I rarely take pics. But, now, I'm a picture taking fool. Its fantastic.
There's my review.
Well, your kids are beautiful.
On an unrelated note, do you always put your little boy in the life jacket when you're around water like that?
I took Emma to the lake once and put her in one and felt like a total dork because no other kid on the beach had one on. So this last time we went, I didn't put it on. She was fine, but I still sort of worried because I had the baby and it was hard to have both my eyes on both of them at the same time.
I don't understand the restock fee, that's messed up.
$150 restocking fee? Are they insane??!!!
What are the chances of selling it for almost cost on ebay? (wishing thinking, but maybe, just maybe?)
I'm sorry to hear the camera isn't working out. The pics you posted are very nice, albeit outdoor, shots.
So, do you not think you need the flash on this photos and the camera automatically turns it on or do you need it and it's too bright?
You may want to check your white balance and see if you can customize it to help with the flash and lighting.
I love the pictures, even the one of you in the mirror! :)
Marty did good! I'm just sorry the camera isn't as good as advertised.
Those good pics, though, are really, really, really good!
Yay for a new camera and a man that knows what to try to make you happy!
I HATE the flash on my camera. It's glaring and unnatural looking. I try never to use it, or if I have to I do that little trick Kristen mentioned a long time ago and use my hand as a diffuser.
I love the pics you posted! I can't wait to see more!!
